The Outdoor Bath at the Landscape Lodge

By Roshan McArthur

This outdoor bathtub at the Landscape Lodge in southeastern France takes self indulgence to a whole new level. Set on the wooden deck of a traditional chalet, it looks out across rolling green fields, pine trees and mountain peaks, combining all the perks of the perfect bathroom with fresh air and the wilds of nature.

“We wanted to give people the opportunity to enjoy the mountain view in the most indulgent way possible,” owner Fran Stringer tells us. “Soaking in hot water is both calming and relaxing, and a great way to recharge, but we decided to go for a bath instead of a hot tub as they don’t require any harsh chemicals. You fill and empty our outdoor bath as you would a normal bathtub. It makes for an organic soaking experience, better for your skin, hair and the environment.”

The bath she chose is the creation of the Outdoor Bath Co.– a group of artisans based in Cambridgeshire, England, who wanted to perfect an organic and sustainable soaking experience for the mind, body and soul. Their bespoke tubs can be constructed from either marine grade aluminum or stainless steel, with trim in cedar, oak or marble. The signature metal chimney can even be engraved with a personal message.

This particular tub is aluminum, with wooden trim and seats made from high-grade, kiln-dried and sustainable oak. Tucked away at the back of the large wooden deck, it manages to achieve a sense of seclusion while also taking in a sweeping mountain panorama – which is no mean feat.

So far, says Fran, it’s been a big hit. “Guests have really enjoyed the bath,” she tells us. “In the daytime, they unwind, enjoy a book and a good soak, and at nighttime they pop open the bubbles.”

Best of all, the tub is big enough for two and can be used all year round. As Fran admits, “Braving the cold to take a dip is all part of the fun!”
