This striking property, perched on a hill overlooking the Tiber Valley in Umbria, is part hotel and part boutique home. A medieval convent, given a masterful makeover, it has been converted into a collection of apartments, each with its own unique character.

The Old Abbey

An old deck of tarot cards, unearthed during the conversion of this medieval convent, has given names to each of its seven apartments.

The property retains much of its original simplicity and character - old stone walls, wooden beams, striking views of the Tiber Valley... But each individual apartment has its own feel. Choose 10 Coins with its blushing reds for a romantic getaway or 9 Coins, with its beautiful stone terrace, for a family escape. Or rent the whole property for a wedding.

We love the floors that were created by piecing together bricks reclaimed during the renovation, the partially-exposed stonework of the walls, and the recessed windowsills that are perfect for nestling in.

Furnishings are simple - comfy sofas, monastic wooden tables and chairs, and wrought-iron bed frames. Decor is bright and cheery - with elegant folk art, sunburst mirrors, and hearts of all kinds in every apartment.

Each apartment has at least one bathroom and a simple kitchen/kitchenette a fireplace with quirky mismatched and multicolored splashback tiling. 

The garden has a large communal swimming pool, and there are two spaces (Sun and Knight) for living and events.

 

THE TIBER VALLEY

The property is located in the beautiful unspoiled countryside of the Tiber Valley, and is easily reached by car on a paved road. The nearest town is Umbertide (12km away) and other Umbrian towns such as Lake Trasimeno, Perugia, Assisi and Gubbio are just a few minutes drive away. It is also a few miles from the border with Tuscany. 

A small grocery store is a 5-minute drive, restaurants 10-20 minutes away, and a town with supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, railway station 12 minutes drive away. 

For golf enthusiasts, the Antognolla Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent-Jones, is just five minutes away by car. Umbria is a culinary dream. Local cuisine includes Upper Tiber Valley truffles and mushrooms, freshwater fish such as eel, perch and tench from Lake Trasimeno, and the mountain cheeses, meats and black truffles of Valnerina. Don't miss the extra virgin olive oil, and the famous wines: Sagrantino, Rosso di Montefalco, and Nobile di Montepulciano.
