This watermill unveiled its millennium-old secrets to just the right family to recover its former glory. A beautiful and romantic property that revealed its significant historical role between wars, its original beauty and purpose has been allowed to shine, while its place in history is secured.
Surrounded by over 32 acres of stunning natural beauty in the heart of Le Marche, this vacation home rental in Italy immerses you into the authentic history of the region in a thousand-year-old former watermill. Nestled up against the Gola della Rossa national park, the ancient structure was lovingly and respectfully restored by a Dutch couple who while in search of their dream home, stumbled on the dilapidated ruins and fell in love.
Renovations took over three years and the painstaking process revealed ancient frescoes and many of the unique and original structural features. The property played a dramatic role in history when previous owner signor Caverni sheltered the Alcalay family during WW2 in the original kitchen on the second floor. Due to his efforts, the entire family survived the war including son Albert Alcalay who went on to become a world-renowned abstract artist with exhibitions in the Guggenheim and around the world.
Divided into two separate apartments that can be joined to accommodate up to 12, each is eye-catching in its authenticity, with huge rustic oak beams, limestone walls, and rustic tiles, as well as bright open spaces offering lovely views of the property.
Entering from the grand hall covered in frescoes, you arrive into a spacious ground floor living and dining room with a big fireplace and sitting areas which connect to a large well-equipped kitchen. Adjacent to the living room is the master bedroom and an additional double bedroom, each with comfortable sitting areas. A third bedroom was designed from the original millers kitchen and sleeps two. The bedrooms share a spacious and modern double bathroom with a two person spa tub.
Upstairs, is a cozy living room and dining area with a breakfast corner and rounded fireplace. The apartment offers sleeping space for four to six people with two double bedrooms and one bath, and from the living area a small arch-way leads to a fun sleeping nook that can accommodate one additional adult or two kids. A large professionally equipped kitchen is situated just outside of the apartment in one of the former caves.
The grounds are ideal for wandering and exploring the beautiful countryside with a private stream, lagoons and waterfalls as well as acres of forests. Simple and rustic, this property offers a peaceful and authentic rural escape.
